Meet the Winemakers

Meet the winemakers who comprise the East Bays active winemaking scene.

Adams Point

adamsPoint

Bill Galarneau
2413 Fourth Street, Berkeley, CA 94710
Like many winemakers, Bill started making wine in his garage. At some point, the operation began to take over every nook and cranny of the house. A decision was required; either keep winemaking as a hobby or go commercial. In 2005, Adams Point became a commercial winery in Berkeley. Adams Point Winery specializes in dessert wines that complement Asian, Caribbean and Latin American cuisines.

Adams Point is unique in offering a white after-dinner wine, as well as a red. A port style of winemaking is used to create these hand-crafted dessert wines. It was the success of his chocolate dessert wine that convinced the then home winemaker, Bill Galarneau to go commercial.

Irish Monkey
Bob Lynch
1017 22nd Avenue #300, Oakland, CA 94606

irishMonkey

Irish Monkey is a family run winery. Bob Lynch as winemaker demands "fruit first" craft, citing that the majority contribution to a great wine is great fruit – without too much alcohol. His focus is on small lot vineyards, where the growers live amongst their own vines. He features wines from the Lovall Valley (Napa ), where extraordinary Merlot, Syrah and Primitivo are grown. Bob features old-world style wines that demand rigorous winemaking and delicate blending. His classic "Five Grapes Meritage" combines Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Underlying all of these is Bob's oft-repeated theme: honest wine that goes with food, and excellent wine that makes people happy.

Cerruti Cellars
100 Webster St. Suite 100, Oakland, CA 94607

There's a wonderful synergy that surrounds Cerruti Cellars', which sits a block from the Oakland Produce Market. The wholesale mart, which has been near downtown for more than 120 years, is where Cerruti's owner John Tudal (pronounced two DAWL) spent many mornings as a boy unloading his dad's and uncle's vegetables from the family farm in Alameda. Cerruti Cellars, which specializes in consumer friendly brands, is poised to open a tasting room close to the soon-to-open Jack London Market. The Tudal/Cerruti family has also resided in St. Helena in the Napa Valley. Cerruti Cellar's wines include a red blend, Tractor Shed Red, in its 11th vintage with the 2007 edition. Also produced is a Sauvignon Blanc called Honker Blanc; and a Merlot rosé, Mer Blanc; as well as a Cabernet Sauvignon blend called 50/50, whose grapes come from Tudal Winery's 35–year-old Cab vineyards – one of the oldest in California -- and from the famed Alexander Valley.

Dashe Cellars
Michael & Anne Dashe
55 4th Street, Oakland, CA 94607

dasheCellars

Dashe Cellars is a family-run winery founded in 1996 by the husband-and wife team of Michael and Anne Dashe. Their combined experience making wines in California and France , is reflected in their wines. The result is complex, balanced, and sensuous wines that capture the charm of the creators and the personality of the top vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, where the grapes are grown. By selecting outstanding vineyards with older vines, rocky soils, and special microclimates, they highlight the distinctive sites from which the wines are made. The resulting wines exhibit the intensity of California fruit, but also possess a stability and a depth of flavors that make the wines lovely in their youth, and equally delightful as they evolve and age-just like a marriage.

Prospect 772 Wine Company
Ron Pieretti & Wendy Sanda

propsect772

A select group of wine experts and food industry veterans with one unifying passion came together in 2001 with the idea of making Rhone-style blends produced from grapes grown on their land in the Sierra Foothills near Angels Camp. Three years later, Prospect 772 was making their first wines at JC Cellars in Oakland with the assistance of winemaker Jeff Cohn. We are committed to bringing wine varietals to discerning wine enthusiasts everywhere. In 2007, they offered The Brawler, redolent of black licorice, tar and Christmas spices, and The Brat, a somewhat opposite red, with a ruby red fruit center under a spicy layer of cinnamon. They are building their own facility on their property in Calaveras County, check their website for latest details.

Rosenblum Cellars
Kent Rosenblum & Roger Rosenblum
2900 Main Street Ste 1100, Alameda, CA 94501
Tasting Room Open: Daily 11 a.m. - 6 p.m

rosenblumCellars

Rosenblum Cellars is the story of a hobby gone wild. Founded in 1978 by veterinarian Dr. Kent Rosenblum, the winery has evolved from basement winemaking to our current facility next to the ferry building on the island of Alameda. Rosenblum Cellars is now a world-class winery, producing award-winning, single-vineyard Zinfandels and Rhone varietals such as Syrah, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.

The more established regions of Napa and Sonoma play a large part in the winery's portfolio, but Rosenblum Cellars is constantly searching for quality vineyards and makes wines from appellations as far north as Mendocino and as far south as Santa Barbara.

Tucked inside an historic railroad building on the edge of the San Francisco Bay, our Alameda Tasting Room is a hidden gem. Our fun-loving staff is nearly as popular as our world-class wines. The tasting room is open daily, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Stage Left Cellars
Melinda Doty & Rich Williams
2102 Dennison Street Oakland, CA 94606

stageLeft

Making wine is our gig at Stage Left Cellars. We don't make much, mind you. We just handcraft small lot wines from Syrah, Viognier, Grenache, and Mourvedre. And Petite Sirah. And a little Roussanne. Boy do we like Roussanne. Even Cabernet and Zinfandel make cameo appearances every now and then. And we mix it up with some of the top vineyards throughout California and Oregon. That's right, Oregon.

Vineyards, varieties, and vat sizes aside, the real name of our game is to make wine that moves you. After all, bridging the gap between mere drink and lasting memories is why we got into this crazy business in the first place. We're open for tastings every first Saturday of the month from 11am-5pm or by appointment. Call for details.
